Late fifteenth century, Eastern Europe. Prince Vlad II lives only for the love of his wife, Princess Elizabeth. When duty calls him to the battlefield to hold off the Turkish invasion, he asks God for one thing - to keep his wife alive during the war. But Elizabeth perishes, and Vlad, angry at God, renounces him. 400 years later. A priest of a special order examines a vampire in a psychiatric hospital, and in the meantime a lawyer from Paris arrives at the castle of Prince Vlad, who begins to tell him his sad love story.
