1947. Hungarian architect László Tóth emigrates penniless from postwar Europe to the United States. After receiving a $25 travel voucher from the local authorities, he moves to Philadelphia to live with his cousin Atilla and his wife Audrey, who own a furniture store. There he starts a new life helping a relative in business and tries to smuggle his wife Erzsebet and her sick niece into the country.
